Winterish Book Tag

Winter is winding down for me now in the South, and it is strange since today I am wearing short sleeves and yesterday I wore a sweater…There were a few bouts of snowfall, but that was about it. Still, winter is still fun to write about, and Kamama suggested that I do another book tag. So, here we go! I hope you enjoy it, and maybe you will think of what books you would choose.

1. Falling Snow: Choose a book that has whites, light blues, and gray on the cover.

I decided to go with Violet’s Perplexing Puzzles, based on Martha Finley’s novels. Did I already mention this in another of my posts recently? Yes. Is it the only good one that fits the description? Also yes. The cover is very pretty although I can’t remember exactly what happened. It has been a while since I read it.

2. Crackling Fire: What book is the best to curl up next to a warm fire with?

I tried to think of a book that is not too emotionally taxing to read that I would feel warm and comfortable with. I went with The Lamplighter by Maria S. Cummins. This is such a beautiful, sweet book. I love the characters through here, especially Willie. He has a conversation at the end that warms my heart and makes me want to cheer him on. And Gerty, the main character, is a quiet, strong, dignified girl that isn’t stereotypical. She feels real and relatable. It’s also fitting that the story talks about light a lot. A crackling fire would add nicely to the effect.

3. Ice Storm: What book do you love that takes the characters through a brutal season?

After going through some options, I settled on North! Or Be Eaten by Andrew Peterson. What do you know, it has snow on the front (at least on my cover). Basically, Andrew Peterson decided to just tear Janner apart in this one, mentally and physically. If you don’t know what I mean when I say things like Fork Factory and sharp claws, go read the book. Then we have my boy, Tink (he is both extremely smart and extremely idiotic in this book), who is thrown into some place and goes through a lot of turmoil. Oh, and Podo has his own rough time too. Pretty much all the main characters go through lots of pain in this one.

4. Winter Wishes: What character is living a life that you dream about?

First of all, I have never heard of winter wishes. I doubt they really come true (unless it was a prayer, but then it wouldn't be a "wish" anymore... Also, I have wished for snow many times and that didn't happen). A lot of the book characters I read about have lots of craziness in their lives like their friends dying and the world falling apart around them, and I would rather not have that. However, I would love to live a life like Millie Keith. She is bold in her faith, she has a fun and loving group of family and friends, and she has a great guy she gets married to. The books are exciting but also ordinary in a nice way. However, like real people she has a lot of struggles that I don’t really dream about.

5. Hot Cocoa: What book do I think should be the next big thing?

I haven’t read a lot of new books recently, but one that I thought of was Easy Target by Tim Shoemaker. I should do a review or recommendation of this sometime. I don’t recommend it for everyone since certain parts were mature, but it had so much heart and truth in it. It is a Christian book published in 2021, and it has some great themes in it, not to mention some lovable characters.

6. Lip Balm and Lotion: What book is full of soothing and comforting words?

Sir Knight of the Splendid Way by W.E. Cule. The Bible would be the ultimate book of comforting words, but it is in a class on its own. Sir Knight of the Splendid Way paints a beautiful picture of the life of a believer on his journey. There are hard times and battles and discouragement along the way, but the words of this book are like balm when you need it. They are so comforting and they remind you of truth, and hope and the deep love that God has for us.

7. Peppermint Mocha: What is your go-to winter food or drink while reading in the winter?

First of all, let me just ask, how many people eat or drink while they read? I’m curious. Some people talk about having tea while they read, but I’m not one of those people, and I don’t want to risk getting tea all over my precious book or little tiny food crumbs that stick in the binding. But if food and drink stains weren’t a thing, I would grab some warm apple cider in a mug with a cinnamon roll on the side. Curled up next to the fire with a blanket, it would be awesome!

I hope you enjoyed this book tag! If you recognize one of the books, you can add a comment. If someone knows Easy Target I might freak out, because literally I know no one else who has read it.

Go and enjoy some stories, y’all!

Until later,

Evelyn Knight
