School Book Tag

It’s that time of year again! Summer is fading away, and school buses are driving around again. For those that don’t go to school, it’s back to books at home and lots of dvds teaching you Latin or math or such. To kick off the season, I’m going to do a book tag which Kamama gave me. Let’s begin!

Math: Pick a book with two characters that equal perfection

Okay, so there’s a lot of ways this could go. There’s the awesome friendship route or the romantic route. One pair that I think of that equals perfection is Bree and Mikkel from The Viking Quest series by Lois Walfrid Johnson. Just the ups and downs, the teasing, the fierce struggle between both of them, the friendship––it is really entertaining to read. Also, they have two different cultures and two different personalities that come together in a unique way. Bree is very fiery and a bit snarky too, which often conflicts with Mikkel’s proud and stoic exterior and his quick temper. But they are more similar than they might admit, and it is cool to watch them grow in the series.

Science: Pick a book that was hard to get into

First of all, this book tag kind of assumes that science is hard to get into? That’s not necessarily true for me, but probably for many people. But to answer the question, I would say that in general the books that I have trouble getting absorbed in are 1800’s books, just because of the style of writing. A Tale of Two Cities was a struggle to get into, since the language was heavy, the plot jumped around a lot and was sometimes confusing, but I did enjoy reading it. Dickens has a unique way of viewing the world and he did well with crafting a complex and compelling story.

English: Pick a book that should be a modern classic

This is a difficult question. It’s hard to decide what fits in with the old classics. There are some books that seem too conversational or down to earth to be what I typically think of in a classic. I think that “The Places Beyond the Maps” by Douglas Kane McKelvey has the feel of a classic. It tells a powerful story, has imagery and symbolism and has an old feel to it. It is also full of truth. However, it might sound a little stuffy to some people.

P.E.: Pick a book that made you race to the finish

Well, if a book has great characters, exciting plot and lots of heart, most of the time I will race to the finish without realizing it. I’m going to pull out one that I haven’t mentioned before, and choose Prisoners of the Sea by Florence Morse Kingsley. This is a Lamplighter Publishing book that is action-packed and mysterious. A lot of the 1800’s books ease into the story and can be slow, but it starts with a shipwreck and a mysterious, abandoned island, and after some time hanging out on this island that seems to have been inhabited extremely recently, someone gets captured and there’s sea battles and other crazy stuff like that. And it’s also based on a true story, which adds to the coolness factor.

Music: Pick a book that reminds you of a song

I chose Dreamlander by K.M. Weiland because it reminded me of “The Call” by Regina Spektor. I have created this trailer in my head of the characters and events in the book as the song is playing sadly in the background (go listen to it, it’s a good song). I think of the main character, Chris Redston, as he walks around a strange tree in the Thyra hills, not believing that he’s in another world entirely. I think of what the people of this other world eventually mean to him, but I can’t explain everything because that would be spoilers…If you have a song that reminds you of a book or vice-versa, put it down in the comments!

Anyway, I hope y’all enjoyed this book tag, and I pray y’all all have a great school year. Read lots of books if you can! Write papers and make them fun!

Ooh, love your answers! A book that reminds me of a song would probably be Burn the Ships by For King and Country. It makes me think of all the pain and overcoming in The Wingfeather Saga books, especially Artham's and Podo's
