Sea Journey Book Tag

Hi, everyone! I decided to make up my own book tag based on the ocean and ships, so I hope y’all enjoy it!

Rushing wind: a book that kept you on the edge of your seat basically the whole time.

I have to say Heaven’s Wager by Ted Dekker. Not only is this a wonderful story, it’s also a great thriller. This is one of the few books that I remember sweating while reading it. It made me so nervous to watch Kent make decisions that may or may not have been illegal…But I also loved the character of Kent, so I cared about what happened to him. It wasn’t just a thriller where I read it for just the excitement, but it also felt very personal.

Salt spray: A book that mentioned an ocean

The Treasure of the Secret Cove by Amy LeFeuvre. This 1800s book is about a village that lives on the seashore, so of course there was the mention of the ocean. I love this book dearly, for the excitement, the romance, the character development, and the truths within it. A lot of the book deals with shipwrecks and rescuing people from said shipwrecks, which is pretty cool. And there’s an arranged marriage in there. It’s complicated.

First mate: A book with a great sidekick

I immediately thought of Peregrine Marek from Behold the Dawn by K.M. Weiland. I’m pretty sure I have mentioned Behold the Dawn recently, so I don’t have to go into that, but let me just say, as my dear friend Serena would put it, Marek is an absolute bean. He is precious. Marcus Annan, the main character, is this gruff and tough tourneyer who has fought a lot (and killed a lot of people he shouldn’t have killed). But Marek is his servant/friend, who is very lighthearted and funny. They make a great pair.

Seasick: a book that made you feel sick

I don’t like to be mean to writers, but I thought of Lunatic in The Lost Books series by Ted Dekker. There were just parts that were just weird and repulsive to read. I didn’t really appreciate how he portrayed Johnis, the main character (who was my favorite character when I read the first book in the series). I think that Dekker was trying to show how evil can affect people, but I personally didn’t like how he did it.

Ship’s log: A book with a lot of historical detail and information

Coronation of Glory by Deborah Meroff. This is historical fiction based on the true story of Jane Grey, the girl who is known as “Nine Days’ Queen” because she was put on the throne of England for nine days after King Edward VI died. I haven’t studied much of the history surrounding Jane Grey, so I don’t know how much was true and how much was artistic license, but this book was very interesting in how it portrayed the royal family in England.

Cannon and guns: A book that was about or mentioned warfare

There are so many books I could choose, but I’ll go with The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. Battle is in the title, after all, and a lot of it deals with the battle against evil at the end of the world.

Compass: A book that helped you follow the right path

I will say The Mystery of the Lost Coins by Lois Walfrid Johnson. This is one of the books in the Viking Quest series, and it has a scene that I can’t discuss fully, but it impacted me greatly. The main character, Bree, is doubting her faith, but she remembered John 6:67-68, and it helped her stand strong. Although I had likely read that verse before, Bree’s struggle and remembrance of the verse have helped me when I have had doubts about my faith.

Blue sky and blue sea: A book with a blue cover

The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall. This is a cute book, the second book in the Penderwicks series. It reminded me of Little Women in a modern setting, and it is about four girls and their dad (their mom had passed away). I enjoyed reading about their adventures, and the funny predicaments they got into.

That’s it for this post! If you have some books that fit these prompts or remind you of the sea or ships, put them down below in the comments. And keep writing, y’all!
