My Favorite Sidekicks

Hey readers! Today we are talking about my favorite “sidekicks” in books. Now, this is different from a side character. (Although sidekicks are technically side characters)What I mean when I’m talking about sidekicks (in this context), I mean a character that is there to specifically assist the main character. Hopefully that makes sense, if not, maybe you’ll get the gist.
M-Bot from Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
We’re starting off strong with a character from a Brandon Sanderson book! M-Bot is an AI programmed into an ancient and abandoned spaceship that our main character, Spensa, finds on her home planet. When he’s not insulting people, M-Bot helps Spensa with a number of things an AI would help with, such as navigation, statistics, and calculations. If that was all he was good for though, he wouldn’t be on this list. M-Bot is the comedic relief, and he is HILARIOUS. If I ever did a post about most comedic characters, he would be at the top of the list.
Quint from Defy the Night
This guy is WAY too underrated. Whenever people talk about this book, it’s always about the two main characters, Tessa and Corrick. I need more love for my man, Quint! He was probably one of the most stressed out people in this whole book, but he was a sweetheart and supported our main characters the whole time. If he doesn’t have a bigger role in book two, I’m throwing a temper tantrum. I would marry this man, he is one of the best sidekicks out there and I love him for it.
James Rayner from The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows
James is probably my least favorite sidekick on this list, but it’s still my favorites list, so congrats buddy. I liked him a lot better before the big plot twist in the second book. But in the first book, he was my man. He was the personal guard of the King, but also his best friend and cousin, so similarly to Quint, he was told secrets he probably shouldn’t have known. He’s one of those characters that is loyal until his dying breaths, and I love those kinds of characters.
Mary Ann from Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Poor Mary Ann, I feel bad for this girl. If you read the book, you know. You know. Mary Ann was the best friend and maid of our main character, Catherine. The two wanted to start running a bakery together, and would often daydream about it together. Mary Ann also assisted Catherine with whatever she needed in the house, she was her maid after all, as well as being moral support (the best quality for a sidekick to have). Mary Ann remained a loyal friend to Catherine right up to the end of the book.
Mask, Dai, and Miki from The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh
Okaaaay, so I know that this is technically three sidekicks, but hear me out. You can’t separate them! They all helped Mina, our main character, together as one unit. They were a team! Mask, who wore a mask with a painted grandmotherly face, gave Mina good advice. Dai, a young boy, guided Mina around and protected her from danger. And Miki, who was a baby… Well, I guess Miki was just cute. Super cute. She rode around in a little pack strapped to Dai’s back. They were the best sidekick team a girl could ask for.
So, those are all of my favorite sidekicks! I love all of them (some more than others but we don’t talk about that), and I would love to hear who your favorite sidekicks are!
Until Next Time!
